Director Lee Storey brings the bizarre history of Up With People to the big screen in this fascinating documentary, recounting of the story of the campy and cultish youth choir. Born out of an ultra-conservative religious sect as a counter-movement to the counterculture of the ‘60s, embraced by the Nixon administration and financed by corporate giants like GM and Halliburton, Up With People’s thousands-strong ensemble of cleancut good-niks (including a young Glenn Close) maintained popularity for decades, performing at four Super Bowl halftime shows from the late ‘70s to the mid ‘80s. Featuring plenty of kitschy archival footage from the group’s heyday, and great archival footage of Mackinac Island, which they used as their staging place, this musical odyssey offers a rare window into an uncharted aspect of our American culture.
